Understanding Negatives Answers

Answers may vary somewhat. Two possible ways to make each sentence negative are given below.

Directions:

Make the sentences below negative by adding negative words where they belong and making any other necessary changes. There is more than one way to transform each sentence.

Example:

    or

    Brent does not believe that nausea and lightheadedness are good reasons to stop an exercise workout.

  5. A local check will clear this bank in three days.
  6. A local check will not clear this bank in three days.

    or

    A local check will never clear thin bank in three days.

  7. A smoke detector can determine whether smoke is coming from frying food or from a house fire.
  8. A smoke detector cannot determine whether smoke is coming from frying food or from a house fire.

    or

    A smoke detector has no way to determine whether smoke is coming from frying food or from a house.

  9. Mr. Gowers’s children gave him flowers for Father’s Day.
  10. Mr. Gowers’s children did not give him flowers for Father’s Day.

    or

    Mr. Gowers’s children never gave him flowers for Father’s Day

  11. The temperature falls below zero in Hawaii.
  12. The temperature does not fall below zero in Hawaii.

    or

    The temperature never falls below zero in Hawaii.

  13. A flea market is held every Saturday and Sunday at the Englewood Farmer’s Market.
  14. A flea market is not held every Saturday and Sunday at the Englewood Farmers’ Market.

    or

    No flea market is held every Saturday and Sunday at the Englewood Farmers’ Market.

  15. Professor Furness studies seabirds.
  16. Professor Furness does not study seabirds.

    or

    Professor Furness never studies seabirds.

  17. I want to visit Pamplona to see the running of the bulls through the streets of the town.
  18. I do not want to visit Pamplona to see the running of thebulls through the streets of the town.

    or

    I never want to visit Pamplona to see the running of the bulls through the streets of the town.

  19. Lee plans to enter the watermelon-seed-spitting contest in Paul’s valley, Oklahoma.

Lee does not plan to enter the watermelon-seed-spitting contest in Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma.

or

Lee never plans to enter the watermelon-seed-spitting contest in Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma.
